Concluding Message

So I tried to make this journal really a collection of all the different ads that I could find of ways companies and consumers are giving back to the environment and the people of the world through different types of advertising, mainly being the nonprofit approach of advertising.

There was a lot more that I wanted to write about, but this type of advertising and way of making money through the use of non profits or then through the use of using the environment as the main concern was what caught my attention the most.

I hope the ads and my thoughts below help to further enhance and show people how companies now a days are making money and how they are giving back to environments.

Thank You

Give Back to the World this Holiday Season.

So there's a new way to do business now. It seems as though it started off with Gap's (RED) campaign and now it has turned into a major business. On one hand, companies are making major money, but on the other hand, so many people around the world are being helped. There's so many mixed views to this idea that its hard to say whether this is a good or a bad thing. But some of the many possible things that are being sold now include:

  • Message Undies for Ladies that donate ten percent of the proceeds to the Living Beyond Breast Cancer Foundation ($84 for seven pairs)
  • A Makeup Palate that donates to the Sustainable Acai Project to preserve the Amazon Rain Forests ($52)
  • Charming CHocolates from Target that send ALL proceeds to St. Jude's Children Research Hosiptal ($10, somewhat more reasonable)
  • Popcorn Bowls - An interesting idea that in my opinion is a little out there. Ten percent of proceeds go to the Share Some Foundation that is working to end hunger but there's one catch, the bowls cost $48 for two boowls and six bags of popcorn
  • Clarks USA's Comfy Leather Slippers that donate ten dollars to the Soul of Africa Charitable Trust
  • Boxers that send twenty percent of their proceeds to the Humane Society to protect animals ( $18 per boxer)
  • Plus many other interesting gifts as seen in the Advertisements Below:

Sam's Club says go "Green for the Holidays"

After looking through so many magazines, I finally ran into one example of advertising in a non profit or environmentally friendly way made by Sam's Club. This 12 page insert shown below has everything from how people could use LED lights for the holidays to save up to 90% of electricity costs to how drinking coffee from Member's Mark that fuels sustainable farming practices.

This entire insert shows way to be environmentally friendly and so its a non profit way of advertising but it is truly for Sam's Club to get more customers because everything that is discussed in the ads is available at Sam's Club and at the end of all the Ad's, the make sure to add an INvitation to Join their local club and shop at their store.

True Non Profit Organizations

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the American Cancer Society are two true non profit organizations that work towards finding cures for diseaes .

One thing to note is how St. Jude's Hospital says that 85 cents of every dollar they receive goes straight to saving lives, but whatever happens to the other 15 cents?

American Cancer Society on the other hand advertises through just talking about the 47 million uninsured people in America and how no one deserves to get Cancer.

Oxfam America Unwrapped

"Pick up the unexpected: a sheep, a crocodile, plant 50 trees, a life jacket, or a mosquito net.

For the holiday season, a lot of companies have found ways to sell all sorts of products that help fight poverty.

http://www.OxfamAmericaUnwrapped.com

So whoever thought you could buy sheep? Well check out this website that fights poverty by selling things from sheep to planting 50 trees (which is helping the environment).

Honda gives better average fuel economy!

The non profit approach of advertising is seen here when Honda ads that its ultimate goal is a cleaner environment, but then when we go to the dealers, we see that their real goal is to sell more and more Honda's in order to make Honda the #1 car company in the world.

Canon, "Sustainability is our standard for measuring CO2 reduction.

Recycle > Produce > Use

Canon has used its energy saving technology that has reduced CO2 emissions by nearly 7 million tons, the amount assimilated by the seas surrounding the earth's coral reefs each year.

As global warming and the concept of recycling, etc has become a major concern in the world, Canon has been taking part in this process for a very long time.

Once again, a non profit way of advertising one's own business.

BEYOND PETROLEUM

BP, formerly known as British Petroleum and now known as Beyond Petroleum, is a multi billion dollar multinational company with headquarters in London, England, UK that is now looking at a much more environmentally friendly and "pocket" friendly way of advertising their company.

This ad is promoting the new technology of solar technology and how the company is investing $70 million to expand their solar manufacturing capacity.

By taking part in such a project, BP is giving back to the community only after raising gas prices through the roof and making billions and billions of dollars from us citizens.

Out of all the profits they make, it is nice to see that at least something is being given back to the economy and the people after all the money that we have donated to them.

BASF

BASF is a German chemical company and the largest chemical company in the world.
The second BASF add promotes diesel-emission control technologies provide proven cost-effective ways to retrofit diesel buses and reduce harmful exhaust emissions.

BASF is a chemical company that uses the aspect of using its ways of benefiting the environment as a means of advertising its successes.

All of BASF's new ads use the nonprofit way of advertising. All of BASF's ads use a focus on making an environmentally friendly scene. This ad promotes Ecoflex, one of the latest breakthroughs from BASF, which is a biodegradable plastic that can be used in bags and packaging. Even though this may be BASF's main business, it is interesting to see that they use an environmentally friendly way of advertising in order to show people that the company really cares about the environment.

The second BASF add promotes diesel-emission control technologies provide proven cost-effective ways to retrofit diesel buses and reduce harmful exhaust emissions

This ad is showing how ethanol can be extracted from corn. BASF helps increase the quality and quantity of corn that farmers can grow.

Hybrids? Cars

What are Hybrids?

A hybrid is the combination of two or more different things, aimed at achieving a particular objective or goal.

For reference purposes, there are so many different things that the word hybrid is involved with:

As wikipedia describes:

  • Hybrid (biology), the offspring resulting from cross-breeding of different plants or animals
  • Hybrid electric vehicle, increasingly common automobiles which employ both a traditional internal combustion engine and an electric motor/generators for provide motive force.

In science:

In transportation:

In electronics and computers:

  • Hybrid CD, a CD containing multiple file systems
  • Hybrid circuit, a combination of several electronic components encapsulated into one unit
  • Hybrid client, a mixed client/server architecture combining thin client and fat client features
  • Hybrid computer, a computer combining features of analog and digital computers
  • Hybrid coupler, a type of directional coupler used in radio and telecommunications
  • Hybrid coil
  • Hybrid course, an academic course that uses a combination of teaching delivery methods: face to face (FTF) classroom instruction and electronic online delivery, used most frequently in higher education
  • Hybrid IRCd, a type of Internet Relay Chat server software
  • Hybrid kernel, a kernel architecture based on combining aspects of microkernel and monolithic kernel architectures
  • The Hybrid Music System, a range of musical add-ons for the BBC Microcomputer
  • Telephone hybrid, an electronic circuit used in telephones

In culture

In sports:

  • Hybrid (golf), a newer class of golf club that combines aspects of an iron and wood.

The most popular type of Hybrids out of all this that we all know are the ones shown below:CARS....

- There are ads everywhere for Hybrid Cars. Even though this is not an approach to donate money to non-profits. It surely does donate money into our own pockets when we buy them. For example, there is a tax return that a person can be rewarded by purchasing a Hybrid Vehicle. This turns out to be an awesome way to advertise and also further enhance a company because just like other companies are helping to benefit Africa and charities, Hybrids help to benefit the environment.

- Additionally to Hybrids, There’s Chevy’s new technology of E85 Ethanol. As it says on the ad, E85 is the most renewable fuel source made from US grown biomaterial such as corn and other grain products. Its like GROWING YOUR OWN FUEL. It helps decrease the economy’s dependence on petroleum and burns cleaner than gasoline.

- What is the meaning of E85? 85% Ethanol and 15% Gasoline. This isn’t exactly the same stuff that I’ve been focusing on throughout the rest of the journal such as making profit through promoting non-profit and good causes, these vehicles do produce major revenue for companies through showing that the company cares about the environment.

- The last of these technologies is the Electric Car. It promotes a daily commute without using a drop of gas. It is run on a lithium Ion Battery with a variety of extending onboard power sources. It uses zero gasoline and produces zero emissions, with an estimated 640 miles.

- Hybrids were discussed in a different form in our class, but the reason why these cars interested me is because they give back to the environment. The companies are making a profit out of selling these cars, but they are doing it through enhancing the environment.

Bracelets? Wrist Action!

"By slipping on a gorgeous bracelet, you can halt hunger, improve lives, and help the world sparkle." By Liz Brody (Oprah Magazine)

Like the Green Movement that is selling bracelets, the Oprah Magazine sells O Bracelets that are made by the very women in Rwanda who are no longer starving, thanks to the wages they're paid for beading them.

Some of the interesting bracelets sold are Hessonite garnet gems with wood designed by Christine Brandt, Slab cut Amethyst designed by Fair Winds Trading artist Dean Ericson, Large globes of prehnite, aquamarine, and rose quartz, designed by Dean Ericson, Crocheted amethyst designed by FWT artist Mary Fisher, and Melanite garnet briolettes designed by Dean Ericson. These bracelets run anywhere from $88 to $330 (Some insand prices for a bracet?) Yes they are, but then again there's always the profit that goes to Oprah Magazine. :)

The (GREEN) Movement?

So get ready for a whole new color. It's no longer RED but now GREEN.

"ARM YOURSELF WITH COMPASSION"

This is the exact motto of Simmons Jewelry Co.'s new Green Bracelt. The Green Bracelet is $125 bracelet that will send $20 or more towards the Diamond Empowerment Fund.

The Mission of the Diamond Empowerment Fund is to raise money for the development and empowerment of the people and communities in Africa where diamonds are a natural resource. The Diamond Empowerment Fund is non-profit international organization established by individuals and businesses in the diamond industry and others who are committed to empowerment of Africa.

Callaway Golf

Callway Golf

As we have seen with many organizations , Callaway Golf takes part in another movement that is to help find a cure for Ovarian Cancer. In their ad, they hire Eva Longoria as an ambassador in order to not only promote the need for finding a cure for Ovarian Cancer, but also promote the name of Callaway Golf itself.

The Callaway Golf Foundation has donated $1 million to the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Programs to create the Callaway Golf Foundation Women's Cancer Initiative (CGFWCI). As an initial step in this innovative partnership, Callaway Golf Foundation and Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) have teamed up with four leading cancer facilities to fast-track breakthrough ovarian cancer tests and treatments. These institutions, recognized for their outstanding work in ovarian cancer research, include: Cedars-Sinai Women’s Cancer Research Institute (WCRI); The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center; Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; and Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins. Led by Dr. Beth Karlan, Director of the Cedars-Sinai WCRI at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, the CGFWCI is a collaborative, national project designed to advance treatment of ovarian cancer through molecular profiling, biomarker discovery and targeted therapy development. (www.callawaygolffoundation.org)

Even though all of these companies such as Callaway Golf are looking to improve lives for people and also give back to the community, another aspect that becomes important is the fact that this is just another way for Callaway Golf to promote its name even furth

Final Journal, CIS 102W, Web Design for Non Profit Organizations

This Journal explores the ways in which many major companies have now decided to make profit through the use of non-profit advertising. I started this project on Microsoft Word at first and have been working on this journal for quite a bit now, but then I decided that in order to incorporate more of what we have learned in our CIS102W class it would be better to turn it into a Blogger.

The one thing that I brought up in class and I was really interested and happy that we talked about was the entire idea of companies using the concept of making profit through the use of non profit organizations and charities. Our most discussed project was the (RED) movement.

As told by the creaters of the RED movement on http://www.joinred.com:

(RED) was created by Bono and Bobby Shriver, Chairman of DATA to raise awareness and money for The Global Fund by teaming up with the world's most iconic brands to produce (PRODUCT)RED branded products. A percentage of each (PRODUCT)RED product sold is given to The Global Fund. The money helps women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.

What's the meaning of the parentheses or brackets? Well, we call them "the embrace." Each company that becomes (RED) places its logo in this embrace and is then elevated to the power of red. Thus the name -- (PRODUCT)RED.

You, the consumer, can take your purchase to the power of (RED) simply by upgrading your choice. Thus the proposition: (YOU)RED. Be embraced, take your own fine self to the power of (RED). What better way to become a good-looking samaritan?!

(Taken from joinred.com)

This concept is very smart because there is really a very small portion of the revenue that actually goes to Global Fund that is supposed to help finance health and community support programs in Africa. A particular ad that was also seen in a magazine is shown below:

Above is the link for a new Cirque Du Soleil show that has just started airing in New York, NY and is playing all winter long. If you have ever went too see a Cirque Du Soleil show, they are actually one of the most amazing shows that you ever see. They involve acrobats and characters of all different sorts that keep you in awe and amaze you with a number of different movements.

The Story In Video:

Saawariyan, a co-prouction of Sanjay Leela Bhansali Films and Columbia Pictures is a new Bollywood movie that is set to release in November 2007. It is the first time in history that Hollywood Studio, Sony Pictures/Columbia Pictures, has co-produced a Hindi feature film. The movie is based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's short story, White Nights. It is starring Salman Khan, Rani Mukherjee and the debut performances of two new stars, Sonam Kapoor (Anil Kapoor's daughter) and Ranbir Kapoor (Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh's Son), SAAWARIYA will be released in theatres on November 9, 2007.

The reason why I was interested by this film is because it is the first time a Hollywood studio has approached a Bollywood (Indian) Studio in order to co-produce a film. If you go to the website, you can even see the major difference in just the trailor quality just because of the fact that Hollywood studio has co-produced the film.

Bollywood is one of the largest film making centers of the world and it sells the largest amount of movie tickets in the world and also produces an extremely large number of films yearly.

Pacman Game At Free Blog Games

Pacman, one of the oldest arcade games, is a game that I always loved playing. You can try playing above.

Pacman - (according to Wikipedia)

" ...

Pac-Man is an arcade game developed by Namco (now Bandai Namco) and licensed for distribution in the U.S. by Midway, first released in Japan on October 10, 1979.[1][2] Immensely popular in the United States from its original release to the present day, Pac-Man is universally considered as one of the classics of the medium, virtually synonymous with video games, and an icon of 1980s popular culture. Upon its release, the game became a social phenomenon[3] that sold a bevy of merchandise and also inspired an animated television series and a Top 40 pop single.[4]

When Pac-Man was released, most arcade video games in North America were primarily space shooters such as Space Invaders and Defender or Asteroids; the most visible minority were sports games (mostly derivative of Pong). Pac-Man succeeded by creating a new genre and appealing to both males and females.[1] Pac-Man is often credited with being a landmark in video game history, and is among the most famous arcade games of all time.[5] The character also appears in more than 30 officially licensed games and sequels,[6] as well as in numerous unauthorized clones and bootlegs.[7]..."

Russell Peters 2

So about this YouTube Video that I just posted a couple minutes ago.

Russell Peters is one of my favorite comedians and so I would like to provide a brief bit of information about him.

A Quick Bio Copied from (http://www.russellpeters.com/)

"

Russell Peters is already a comedy superstar in much of the world. A recent one-off appearance at London’s Shaw Theatre sold out in 48 hours and when his first shows in Sydney and Melbourne were announced in May 2006, 10,000 tickets were gone in less than two days with zero advertising. In April 2005, Russell was the first South Asian to headline and sell-out the Apollo Theatre in New York City. Common knowledge decrees that a comedian must have a TV sitcom, a hit movie or a high profile comedy album to succeed, but Russell has built a massive underground following by word of mouth, completely bypassing mainstream media outlets. For the past few years he’s been selling out theatres across the US and Canada, all without ever appearing on network television in the United States. His US agents, Creative Artists Agency, calls this phenomenon ‘The Legend Of Russell Peters.’

Russell has made his reputation by speaking to people that no one else is talking to. Much of his comedy speaks to immigrant communities around the world - Indian, Arab, Caribbean, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Vietnamese, and other South and Southeast Asian communities that remain invisible to the mainstream media and sometimes to the broader white population. Russell’s new DVD and CD, Outsourced, was taped before a sold out audience at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco, and gives viewers and listeners an excellent overview of Russell’s comedic genius. He paces the stage interacting with the audience, tossing off one-liners and engaging in impromptu dialogue with his fans. As much a humorist as a comedian, Russell doesn’t really tell jokes. Rather, he uses his wry observations on the subjects of race and class to illuminate our human shortcomings with the sizzling accuracy of a well-aimed laser. “I don’t put people down,” Russell points out. “I want to elevate them, but in a funny way.” His quick wit and ability to mimic language and accents allows Russell to create characters of all races and cultures and forge an immediate bond with his audiences, regardless of their racial and cultural background. Outsourced has gone Five Times Platinum in his home country of Canada.

Russell has been doing stand up for 17 years and already has an impressive resume. He had a recurring role in the Canadian sitcom Lord Have Mercy and hosted his own BBC chat show Network East Late, where he interviewed Ismail Merchant, of Merchant Ivory productions, UK hit makers Faithless, Gurinder Chadha, director of Bend It Like Beckham and many other South Asian and mainstream artists and personalities. His movie credits include the comedy Quarter Life Crises, My Baby’s Daddy, martial arts flick Tiger Claws III and the forthcoming bank heist thriller The Take with John Leguizamo and Rosie Perez...."

As everyone else has been saying, "It's about damn time!"

For some reason or another, Verizon Wireless tends to always be the latter service provider to provide some of the latest and most technological advance phones. Why is this one may ask? Well many people don't know about different wireless technologies, but they usually come in two popular formats. One is the CDMA technplogy and one is the GSM technology. Service Providers such as Cingular and T-Mobile use GSM Technology, while Verizon uses the CDMA Technology.

CDMA Technology - (Code division multiple access) As Wikipedia says:

Code division multiple access (CDMA) describes a communication channel access principle that employs spread-spectrum technology and a special coding scheme (where each transmitter is assigned a code). By contrast, time division multiple access (TDMA) divides access by time, while frequency-division multiple access (FDMA) divides it by frequency. CDMA is a form of "spread-spectrum" signaling, since the modulated coded signal has a much higher bandwidth than the data being communicated.

An analogy to the problem of multiple access is a room (channel) in which people wish to communicate with each other. To avoid confusion, people could take turns speaking (time division), speak at different pitches (frequency division), or speak in different directions (spatial division). In CDMA, they would speak different languages. People speaking the same language can understand each other, but not other people. Similarly, in radio CDMA, each group of users is given a shared code. Many codes occupy the same channel, but only users associated with a particular code can understand each other.

CDMA is also the current name for the cellular technology originally known as IS-95. Developed by Qualcomm and enhanced by Ericsson, CDMA is characterized by high capacity and small cell radius.

GSM -

Global System for Mobile communications (GSM: originally from Groupe Spécial Mobile) is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world, with its promoter, the GSM Association, estimating that the GSM service provides 82% of the global mobile market [1] and is used by over 2 billion people across more than 212 countries and territories.[2][3] Its ubiquity makes international roaming very common between mobile phone operators, enabling subscribers to use their phones in many parts of the world. GSM differs significantly from its predecessors in that both signaling and speech channels are digital call quality, and so is considered a second generation (2G) mobile phone system. This has also meant that data communication were built into the system using the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

The key advantage of GSM systems to consumers has been higher digital voice quality and low cost alternatives to making calls, such as the Short message service (SMS, also called "text messaging"). The advantage for network operators has been the ease of deploying equipment from any vendors that implement the standard.[4] Like other cellular standards, GSM allows network operators to offer roaming services so that subscribers can use their phones on GSM networks all over the world.

Newer versions of the standard were backward-compatible with the original GSM phones. For example, Release '97 of the standard added packet data capabilities, by means of General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). Release '99 introduced higher speed data transmission using Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE).

IMac Competitor

On the link above, We see gatewey trying to copy what Apple does with their IMac's. It seems to be that Apple has become one of the top leading producers of music players, computers, and phones. If Apple does it, so does everyone else. Apple made the IMac and so Gateway has made a Windows based PC that looks very similar to the IMac.

While browsing through the Wilson Center of Social Entrepreneurship, I decided to pick Blogger.com as the website that I would like to explore and start my blog on. Being that this is the first time I am using this website, I am just trying to get the hang of how posting a blog works and so I haven't chosen what I would like to talk about in my blogs. That's it for now. Bye
